You will see a series of new Private Property POSTED No Fishing, No Hunting, No Trapping yellow signs along Old Field Road and the entrance to the Park that were posted on July 24, 2023. The Park has a long established management policy of not authorizing fishing, hunting, or trapping on the private lands of the Frank Melville Memorial Park. In the past when fishing was authorized, there was fishing line, hooks, and lures in the plants, shrubs, and trees of the pond shoreline. Waterfowl and shore birds did become entangled and injured with these abandoned lines and hooks.
This spring there has been a significant number of fishermen coming to the Park and fishing along the pond shoreline in spite of the numerous signs advising Park users that fishing was not permitted in the Park. When approached by Park staff and security, there were several very unfortunate confrontational situations. The fishermen refused to leave and were aggressive. We know this confrontational attitude is not the true Sportsman fisherman, but these few have made us raise to a higher level of protection at the Park.
The Park property is now Posted to New York State Posting Law for Private Property prohibiting fishing, hunting, and trapping.
If a person is found fishing on the Park’s Private Posted lands and underwater lands, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Environmental Conservation Police and/or Suffolk County Police can assist our security and issue the appropriate summons to anyone found on Park’s private property fishing, hunting or trapping.
We want the community to enjoy the Frank Melville Park for its open space and its natural resources. We will continue every effort to make the Park safer and enjoyable for all!
Thank You,
Chuck Hamilton
